5 Signs Your Windows Need Replacing — A Scottish Homeowner's Guide
Scotland's summers might be short, but they're the perfect time to think about your windows and doors. Getting replacements fitted now means your home is ready well before the cold and wet weather arrives in autumn. Here are the five most common signs that your windows are overdue for replacement.
1. Draughts Around the Frame
If you can feel cold air coming in around your window frames — even when the windows are fully closed — the seals have failed. This is one of the most common problems with older uPVC and timber windows. Over time, the rubber seals and gaskets that keep draughts out degrade, crack and shrink. Once a seal fails, no amount of draught-proofing tape is a long-term fix. You'll notice the difference on your heating bills immediately after replacement.
2. Condensation Between the Panes
Condensation on the inside of your windows (the room-facing surface) is normal in cold weather — it's caused by warm, moist air inside the house hitting the cold glass. But if you're seeing condensation or a cloudy, misty appearance between the two panes of glass, that's a different problem entirely. It means the hermetic seal on your double-glazed unit has failed and the insulating gas has escaped. A failed unit provides significantly less thermal insulation than an intact one — and it won't clear no matter how much you wipe it.
3. Difficulty Opening, Closing or Locking
Windows and doors that are stiff, sticking, dropping or difficult to lock properly are more than just an inconvenience — they're a security risk. Over time, frames can warp (particularly timber), hinges and mechanisms wear out, and the whole window can drop out of alignment. If you're forcing your windows to close or struggling to engage the lock, it's time to look at replacement.
4. Noticeable Outside Noise
Modern A-rated double glazing provides significant noise reduction compared to older windows. If you can clearly hear traffic, neighbours or general outside noise through your closed windows, it's a sign your glazing is underperforming. Newer double-glazed units with laminated or acoustic glass can make a remarkable difference to the noise levels inside your home.
5. High Heating Bills
If your heating bills seem high relative to the size of your home, your windows could be a significant contributing factor. Older double-glazed windows — particularly those installed more than 15–20 years ago — often have much lower energy performance than modern A-rated units. The technology has improved dramatically. Replacing old double glazing with new A-rated units can reduce heat loss through your windows by 30–40%, which adds up to a meaningful saving on your annual heating costs.
