Triple glazing has become increasingly popular in Scotland. Scotland's climate is colder and wetter than most of England, and the idea of an extra pane of glass keeping heat in has obvious appeal. But is triple glazing actually worth the extra cost? Here's an honest assessment.
What's the Difference?
Double glazing uses two panes of glass with an argon gas-filled gap between them. Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second gas-filled gap, improving insulation further. Both types are measured by their U-value — the lower the U-value, the better the insulation. A good A-rated double glazed unit achieves around 1.2–1.4 W/m²K. Triple glazing can achieve 0.6–0.8 W/m²K — roughly half the heat loss.
Energy Savings
Triple glazing does deliver meaningful energy savings over double glazing in Scotland's colder climate — but the difference is more modest than many people expect. The biggest efficiency gain always comes from moving to double glazing. Moving from double to triple adds a further improvement, but returns diminish.
