How to Choose the Right Composite Door for Your Home
By Elite Group Scotland | Composite Doors, Buying Guides
Choosing a new composite door is an exciting decision — but with hundreds of styles, colours, glazing options and hardware combinations available, it can also feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through the key decisions so you can find the perfect door for your home with confidence.
1. Choose Your Style
The first decision is the overall style of door. There are two broad categories:
Traditional / Panel Styles
These feature raised panels, classic mouldings and often include decorative glazing. They suit traditional and period properties well, and are particularly popular in Scotland where sandstone and red brick homes are common. Examples include the popular Solidor Timber range and many of the classic Elite door designs.
Contemporary / Flush Styles
Smooth, flat-faced doors with clean lines. Ideal for modern homes, extensions and new builds. Contemporary composite doors make a striking statement and are increasingly popular as homeowners modernise their properties.
Not sure which suits your home? Visit our showroom in Falkirk to see both styles in person — it's much easier to decide when you can see and touch the actual doors.
2. Pick Your Colour
Colour is one of the most important decisions you'll make — and one of the most personal. Modern composite doors are available in a vast range of colours, from classic Chartwell Green and Anthracite Grey to bold reds, blues and blacks.
A few things to consider:
Match your property
Consider the colour of your brickwork, render or stonework, and your windows. A door that contrasts with the house can look striking, but one that clashes can look wrong.
Kerb appeal vs. resale value
Bold colours make a statement, but neutral tones like black, grey and white tend to appeal to the broadest range of buyers if you ever sell.
Dual colour
Many composite doors can be specified in different colours inside and out — for example, Anthracite Grey on the outside and White on the inside to match your interior decor.

3. Consider Your Glazing
If you want glazing in your door, you'll have a wide range of options — from simple clear glass to decorative stained glass, obscure glass and intricate leaded designs.
Privacy
If your door faces a busy street or a neighbour's window, consider obscure or decorative glass that lets light in without compromising privacy.
Security
All glazing in composite doors should be double glazed as a minimum. Look for toughened or laminated safety glass for added security and impact resistance.
Style
Decorative glass can add real character to a door. Stained glass, Georgian bar designs and contemporary etched patterns can all enhance the appearance of your entrance.
4. Choose Your Hardware
The handles, letterbox, knocker and numerals on your door all contribute to the finished look. Chrome and gold finishes suit traditional styles, while black and brushed nickel hardware complement contemporary designs.
Don't overlook the quality of the locking cylinder — this is your door's primary security component. Look for anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill cylinders that meet TS007 3-star standards.
5. Think About Security Rating
All composite doors offer better security than standard uPVC doors, but there are different levels of security certification to look for:
PAS 24
The standard security test for external doors. A PAS 24-certified door has been tested against physical attack and is the minimum you should look for.
Secured by Design
The police-preferred specification for doors and windows. Doors with Secured by Design accreditation offer the highest level of tested security.
Many of the Solidor and Elite doors we supply carry these certifications — ask us for details when you enquire.
6. Make Sure It's Professionally Installed
Even the best composite door will underperform if it's not installed correctly. A poorly fitted door will have draughts, may not lock properly, and could fail prematurely. Always use an experienced, local installer with verifiable reviews.
At Elite Group Scotland, every door is installed by our own trained team — we don't use subcontractors. All our installations are backed by a 10-year guarantee.
